Holy Week Worship Schedule |
Sunday,
March 16 |
-
At
the 11:00 a.m. service, the children will lead the
congregation in a procession of palms after we hear
the reading of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
We will walk with Jesus in his triumphal entry into
Jerusalem and then wonder with sadness at what went
wrong soon thereafer. Worship will end with the
stripping of the altar to symbolize the entry into
holy week..
-
The
9:00 a.m. service will be the usual Service of Morning
Prayer with Holy Communion.
|
Monday-Wednesday,
7:00 p.m. |
We
will have a short worship service each night as we
accompany Jesus through this last week in Jerusalem.
Some of the many gifted Lay Speakers in our congregation
will bring the message these evenings. Here is the
schedule:
|
Thursday,
7:00 p.m. with dinner from 5:30 to 6:30 |
"Maundy"
is the Latin word for "mandate" or "command."
It was at the time when Jesus was giving final instructions
to his disciples at their last meal together that he
said, "A new command I give you: love one another
as I have loved you." The night we celebrate the
remembrance of that command is called "Maundy Thursday"
which this year is March 20. The women of the church
will provide for all of us a simple meal of soup and
bread starting at 5:30 and then we'll have worship in
the Sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. On that night, we will have
a Service of Holy Communion as we remember this holy
command. |
Friday,
7:00 p.m. A Service of Tenebrae |
The
service of worship is taken from an early Christian
service called Tenebrae. The name Tenebrae is the Latin
word for "darkness" or "shadows."
On this evening we will experience only a small portion
of Christ’s pain and suffering the day of His
crucifixion. One of the most conspicuous features of
the service is the gradual extinguishing of candles
until only a single candle, considered a symbol of our
Lord, remains. As it gets darker and darker we can reflect
on the great emotional and physical pain that was very
real for Jesus that evening. |
Easter
Sunday, March 23 |
-
9:00
and 11:00 a.m., identical services in the
sanctuary, with a brunch served from 10:00-10:45
a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
-
At
the end of both services the choir will sing the
"Hallelujah!" from Handel's Messiah; members
of the congregation who so desire are invited to
join the choir in singing this great oratorio chorus.
