Never
been here before?
I
know that it is not always easy to walk into a place
where you have not been before, so I set up this page
to answer some immediate questions. Please contact me
if you have other questions or if there is something
I can do for you. This is a church full of loving and
open people and there is very much a place of worship,
service, and friendship for you.
9:00
a.m. Morning Prayer. More information is
here. This
is a small, quiet worship time, very much enjoyed
by those who come. If you come from a Roman Catholic,
Episcopal, or Lutheran background, this will feel
very comfortable to you. There are no mysteries--each
step is clearly explained.
10:00
a.m. Sunday School:
We'll find a place for you and this is a
great way to get to know people. Children and youth
are all in the Fellowship Hall. And if you don't want
to go to Sunday School, just head down there with
them and enjoy a cup of coffee and conversation in
the kitchen. More information is here.
By the way, we really are going to buy a new coffee
maker when we move to our new facility.
11:00
a.m. Traditional United Methodist
Worship. We sing hymns and recite the
Apostles' Creed and have prayer and a children's message
and offering and adult message. It's a combination
of casual and formal. Children of all ages are completely
welcome and we celebrate the noises they make, but
there is also a nursery for the little ones, should
you choose.
What
to wear? Whatever you feel comfortable
in. This is a pretty casual church clothing-wise, so feel
free to discard the tie and high heels.
What
happens when you first walk up those outside steps?
Someone will be just inside the door to
greet you and give you a worship bulletin so you'll know
everything that is going on. Generally, we start announcements
at 10:55 for the 11:00 service, and folks will still be
trickling in for a few more minutes.
Where
should you sit? Where ever you want.
If you take someone's seat (long-time church-goers tend
to "own" their accustomed seats!), that person
will just move somewhere else. No big deal. As a rule,
however, the north side of the church is the "adult"
side, and the south side is where those with younger children
sit, simply because they are a little more comfortable
grouped together and they can help with each other's children.
How
does the service begin? After the
announcements, everyone will be invited to stand and greet
one another. Trust me, you will be greeted. After about
90 seconds, the pianist will begin to play and that is
the signal to return to your seat and sit down. The choir
will sing an introit (introduction), and then someone
will come to the microphone and invite you to stand for
the Call to Worship. You'll read the bold type
in the bulletin. There will then be a song when the acolytes
(young boys and girls) come in and light the altar candles.
The bulletin is easy to read and follow.
Where
are the bathrooms? OK, we admit
it, in our current facility, they are a little difficult
to find. You'll need to go down the interior steps on
the south side of the Sanctuary (they are steep, so be
careful), meander through the basement Fellowship Hall
past the kitchen, go up a short flight of steps to the
Education Wing, and take a left. They are right there.
Line forms in the hallway--great time to get to know people!
Our new building will have LOTS and LOTS of bathrooms.
We promise.
What
is "First Sunday Lunch?" That
is a wonderful potluck meal when the various superb cooks
in the church all bring something delicious to eat and
everyone heads downstairs after church. The children love
it--what a selection of desserts! It's a relaxed time
for conversation and a ton of fun. Happens on the first
Sunday of each month, and that is also when we celebrate
Holy Communion.
What
is Holy Communion? Also known as
the Eucharist, or the Lord's Table, it is a time when
we experience over again of the core of the Good News:
Jesus has come, given himself up, went to the cross for
us, and then found life again in the resurrection. It
reminds us beautifully of the love of God for us. You
will be invited to come by rows to the kneeling rails
at the front of the church. One person will give you a
piece of bread. Another will bring a cup with grape juice,
and you dip the bread into the cup and then ingest it.
If you can't come forward, a server can bring the communion
elements to you. If you choose not to participate, that
is also fine. There is no pressure. You do not need to
be a member of this church or a United Methodist to participate.
How
do you join the church? Talk with
the pastor, Christy
Thomas. She'll walk you through the process.
When
are you moving to the new facility?
Construction
began in March, 2008 with an anticipated completion
in December, 2008.
