Volunteers in Mission: our own Brittany Burrows

“Allons Chanter a Sion!”

Two summers ago, I had the opportunity to travel to Cameroon, West Africa with a group of 20 college students to lead a camp for teenagers there. One of my favorite memories from the camp was singing this song, which translates to “Come On, Sing to Zion!” Although each of the teens at the camp had experienced so much hardship, they wanted to praise God with song and dance any chance they got. In Cameroon, HIV/AIDS and Malaria are prevalent, children have to hunt in the jungle to feed their families, and the water carries diseases. Yet in the midst of all this darkness, the people of Cameroon have a beautiful light within them; joy, hope, and thankfulness for the blessings they have.
At the camp, I was so impressed by the campers’ hunger and thirst to know Christ. We gave each of the campers a new bible, and they were so excited to receive them! Anytime there was free time at camp, they were reading their new bibles. Anytime our American team was just waking up each morning, the campers were already awake, dressed, and reading their bibles. They were so eager to learn about Christ! I had an amazing experience in Cameroon, and ever since my trip I have felt God calling me to do mission work in another country after I graduate. I would like our church to partner with me as I do mission work. There are so many ways you can do this. You can pray for me while I am away and as I prepare to go. You can write or e-mail me, and I will also be sharing with our congregation pictures and stories from my trip. You can donate other gifts, anything that you think would be useful for the mission, such as American Airline miles.
You can also donate financial gifts. I hope to raise $15,000 dollars for the trip, which will cover my airfare, shots, room and board, and ministry expenses, and will allow me to stay in the country for a long period of time. I am starting to fundraise now, so that I can purchase my plane ticket and shots in the coming months.
I am so thankful to have this opportunity, I know that so many of us would love to do mission work overseas, but that it is not possible. However, as a member of your church family, I will be representing you wherever I go.
The mission of the United Methodist Church is to make disciples for Jesus Christ. Christ calls us to make disciples everywhere…here in Krum, and all over the world. During my mission service, I hope to do just that. Thank you so much for your support!
