Christy's
Comments, June 23 Krum Star, "Transitions"
On June 11, I walked into the contemporary worship service at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church preparing to preach my final sermon. Huge moving boxes sat scattered all over the stage and the meeting space. Their purpose: to evoke in the worshipers the awareness that each of us lives in a state of transition. And certainly they reflected my own state of transition, since I had packed my office just the day before.
A friend of mine once said about moving, “You have to put your hands on everything you own.” Such intriguing words—there is nothing like a move to encourage a person to take inventory, to celebrate memories, and to decide, “Do I keep this? Give that away? Discard this permanently?”
A move can be a delightful and healing way to shed unnecessary things. Transitions, well received, give us opportunities to see the world with fresh eyes. Everything looks different and patterns change to accommodate those differences.
This move to Krum, as the new Pastor to the Krum UMC, is most definitely a welcome transition. I have loved serving for the past three rich and powerful years as Associate Pastor at Lovers Lane. They’ve been full of worship and study, service and mission, laughter and tears, celebration and love. I would have happily stayed.
But the call came, as it does in the United Methodist Church. My District Superintendent said, “Christy, the Cabinet has agreed on your appointment as Pastor at Krum. Will you accept the appointment?” My response? A joyful “Yes, I will.”
So with great anticipation, I look forward to life in Krum, and the work of the Krum UMC, starting June 18. Near the end of June, the moving van will arrive, full of boxes to unpack, as all that I’ve touched find new places in my home. My husband, the Rev. J. Keith Cupples, serves as Senior Pastor of Kirkwood UMC in Irving, TX. He will join me here while he also joins the ranks of commuters. We both said, “Krum is where we want to live.”
Thank you for the opportunity to become part of the life of this great community.
