August 25 Krum Star Article
"The Language of Love"
In May, I traveled to Sydney, Australia to enjoy the pleasures of holding my first grandchild, Joshua, born somewhat premature 10 days before my arrival. My daughter-in-law is from Colombia and her mother, Josefina, had arrived just before the baby’s birth with plans to stay for a couple of months and help.
Josefina and I first met at Jonathan’s and Adriana’s wedding in 2003 and had not seen each other since. Although our children are both fully bi-lingual, their respective mothers don’t share the same talents. Essentially, Josefina and I could communicate by gestures and with about 30 words that we both understood along with a few we made up.
Mornings were given over to baby and mother care, laundry, cooking, errands and the several hours I needed to stay current with projects here in the States using their Internet connection. By mid-afternoon, with mother and baby napping, Josefina and I would each grab a book and walk together to one of the gorgeous beaches not far from their residence in Sydney. For an hour or two, we would walk and sit and read and refresh our souls, thoroughly enjoying each other’s company.
Somehow, without words, Josefina and I formed a deep and loving friendship. We seemed to transcend our normal ways of communicating and spoke to each other more on the level of kindred spirits than anything else. Yet even in that friendship, much of our lives remain mysteries to the other. We don’t have the common language to tell our stories and reveal those secrets.
That friendship gives insight into our relationship with God. Although God may know us thoroughly, much about God will always remain mysterious to us. There is too much to comprehend, and we don’t know the language of infinite love and infinite grace. We can only see a glimpse, as though a veil occasionally parts and our eyes are opened to deep riches of the God-loved life.
This coming Sunday, August 27, we will look more fully into what I call "The Great Reversal," the power of the coming of Jesus to bring profound transformation and find the power to be able to more access those places of infinite love and grace.
Come, join us as we as a community of faith engage in the demanding and revealing journey, deeper into the mystery of God.
See you in church,
Christy
