For years, I have been fascinated by the
connectivity of the Internet and by the vast amount of
information available online. We get instantaneous news
about world events—not that this is always good;
and quick access t lots of information—not always
accurate; and a public forum for anyone who wishes to
have a say about anything—not that such opinions
are well formed! Yes, we see much potential for good and
an equal amount of potential for things not so good.
The Internet also often serves as the “front
door” for people who might consider the possibility
of moving into a new community or attending a local church.
At one point, I interviewed 70 people who had recently
joined a different church. Each had looked at the website
before setting foot in the door. One new member said,
“The staff didn’t have to introduce themselves.
I know who they were because I learned about them before
I walked in.”
Walking into a church for the first time
can be an intimidating experience, often bringing up multiple
questions. “What is expected?” “Will
anyone speak to me?” “Where are the bathrooms?”
“What about the children—where do they go?
Who takes care of them?” “What is the primary
belief structure of the church? How involved are they
in mission and outreach?” “Is there a place
for me?”
All important questions, and many need
to be answered by experience the life of the church. But
some may be answered in advance. In my short time here
in Krum, I’ve sought to make the Krum United Methodist
Church website a welcoming and informative place. I’ve
only just begun and would love feedback and ideas. So
please check out our website here. And while you are here,
consider joining our email list
so you can receive updates about what is happening at
the Krum United Methodist Church. It’s easy to do
and you’ll see the simple instructions when you
get to the site. Mostly, let me know what you think and
what questions you’d like to see answered there.
